Mutant Gangland is Free (but only as in Freedom)

Image
Mutant Gangland is a nice-looking, turn-based strategy game that just happened to have all of its code released under the MIT license . The games graphics follow a classic pixelart aesthetic This project is attempting to follow the classic Free Software game business model where you share the source but keep the artwork proprietary, which is perfectly acceptable and fine . It currently sells for $3.99 and it's available for GNU/Linux, OSX, Windows, and Android. So let this be an example to all of the new wave of indie developers. People, share you're freaking source codes under a Free License! Not only you're not losing money because of this, you'll also be getting free revisions and improvements to your own code, and you will be providing others the chance of creating something different with it. Ufo:AI and A3P updates

Image
A long awaited update of one of the flagship FOSS games has just been released: UFO:AI ! UFO:AI (for those not in the loop) is a turn based strategy game very similar to the classic X-COM . The improvements of the new version are multi fold; Besides big improvements to the render engine, game-play was also overhauled, but head over to their full change log to get the full picture. Speaking of pictures , here a nice one showing the new glow effects on the world map: (Maybe qudobup will be so nice and make a video of it too *hint*) A3P 1.0 A3P ( we mentioned it before ) was also updated to its first non beta release today. You can check it out directly in your browser (a feature of the Panda3D engine used) or download it as a normal version (currently Windows only). A3P Gameplay

Non RTS strategy games

An update so quickly? Behold the Free Gamer world is coming to an end. :p So, we mentioned some promising RTS games in the last update. OK, I forgot to mention Spring1944 , but I am also a bit reluctant to mention Spring and its mods since it is such a pain in the backside to get it running correctly. :( Back on topic... there a quite a few really great non RTS FOSS strategy games. I guess I don't really need to mention the classics to the typical reader of this blog, but Wesnoth , FreeCiv , FreeCol and UFO:AI are all very playable and good looking games! However there are others that get less attention and also some that show great promise! Advanced strategic command Advanced strategic command is one of those that gets relatively little news coverage, even though it is a really playable game. Granted, its graphics are pretty much the same as its big inspiration, the classic Battle Isle series , but that doesn't necessarily make them bad, right? A new version was just rele...
