YSoccer out of Beta

Image
Since football is all the rage right now - unless you are hiding under a rock then you can't have escaped the World Cup - then a little bit of football game news seems appropriate! The game formerly known as Yoda Soccer has left beta and been unleashed upon the classic pixel soccer game world as YSoccer . YSoccer version 14 If you never played Sensible Soccer, then you may not yet get what the fuss is all about - if that's the case then you should download it and give it a try! Sadly football games are a little under served in the open source game community. Bygfoot and Eat the Whistle are quite playable, if a little raw. Project Football is almost a game. Open Football and Open World Soccer never quite got off the ground. Project Football looked great but was last updated 4 years ago YSoccer stands out amongst them and deserves a bit more attention than it probably gets. EDIT: I feel I was a little unfair to Open World Soccer. If you download 0.5 (the most recent release...

Not Dead

Nope, I'm not dead, just caught up in doing real work so time has been at a premium lately. Eat the Whistle Also not dead is arcade football game Eat the Whistle . They have migrated to SVN as they build up to a new release. 'They' could mean just 'he' or just 'her' as I'm not quite sure how many people are working on EtW but the good news is it is being worked on. It's a fun game to play but suffered from being very buggy so hopefully this release will bring it a new lease of stable life. What has been dead has been my Freshmeat inbox - no notable game releases for a while apart from Widelands , Bub Brothers , ja2-stracciatella , Wormux , and Xarvh. And those are just the ones on the Game Tome. Still, like I say, Freshmeat has been quiet. ;-) Xarvh is not linked because it has been renamed to Everborn . It's a turn-based multiplayer fantasy strategy game, with real-time battles, born as a clone of Simtex's Master of Magic. In case yo...

Strawberries & Cream

I had these grand plans for today, but instead I slept through two alarms and got to work 2 hours late, and forgot what my plans were. *groan* Eat the Whistle ActionCube Anyhow, onto relevant matters, that previously-imminent VDrift release is now official . Go get it, honestly it is a good experience. And it looks great too. :-) I played Eat the Whistle for the first time yesterday. Any attempts to run it on Linux had failed even though it has been ported, but I thought I'd have a crack on my Windows laptop and (despite a few graphical glitches) it worked! It's good fun although whenever the other team had the ball I struggled to locate the player I was in control of. However in terms of gameplay feel, it's quite nice to play and a little reminiscent of Sensible Soccer although more dynamic but not quite as sharp. Not sure if I've mentioned this before, so I'll mention it now... ActionCube looks fun. I might have a bash at it later in the week. Think Count...
