Download BOS Wars 2.7 RTS for Windows

Image
BosWars Gameplay Bos Wars is still a nice fast-paced and somewhat lightweight RTS for you to enjoy, even though the sound mixing is still brutal but getting your hands on the latest Version for Windows is not as straightforward, as it was in 2010. Thankfully, you can get a working version for Windows from Portableapps . The cool 3D pixel soldier in the thumbnail above is from OpenGameArt by the way. Still kicking, old design and all. Wurmsyn - Retro Fantasy RTS

Image
Wurmsyn is fast-paced, tiny and has HUGE RPG-like scenarios. I don't quite understand how this game's pace is playable without exploiting things like turrets and how to play on a 1080p screen without touching it with your nose but I am impressed nonetheless. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gRhtbYjGkDQ I'd love some beginner entry levels but perhaps I'm just not the target audience. Wurmsyn is available on Steam  and uses the Workshop with 7 entries so far: Alternatively, you can download the game from https://github.com/Andrettin/Wyrmsun/releases - seems a bit confusing - you have to download the exe, the dll and extract the zip. run the exe in a command line to know how to use it (you have to use the -d parameter to show it where the data folder is (extracted zip)). Or build it yourself. One annoying thing about the engine is that it loads levels very slowly. I think this is because images are loaded separately rather than packages being used. Oh well. The project ha...

Games with G (Gorynlich & Gigalomania)

Image
Great news for people who like GGGGames ;) The author of the new action roguelike dungeon crawler kind of darwen mayham game Gorynlich was so kind to inform us his game. It comes with this funny trailer (and some great programmer's art :p ): The code is licensed under the LGPL, while the assets are only freeware right now. But the author seems to be open to look into replacing the assets with Creative Commons licensed ones if someone is interested in doing so. Gorynlich is done by the same author as the ASCII game Goblin Hack by the way. Another nice game starting with G, is the awesome remake of the oldie Megalomania, appropriately called Gigalomania ! The author is still looking for improved art asset contributions, but the game itself is already quite playable (even on mobile devices and a bunch of other rare systems!). Also check out the other two cool games by the same developer: Erebus RPG and Conquests (a Civ like game) .

Cry for programming help!

Image
Ok, we don't normally do these kind of recruitment posts (don't send us emails about that!), but for the following two FOSS game gems we will make an exception (and it is officially sanctioned by our boss Charlie ;) ). So which ones do I mean? Well these: Link to homepage ; example video Link to homepage ; example video In recent months both games have stalled in development and people are starting to become quite pessimistic about the future ( 1 , 2 ). Strangely enough (for typical FOSS projects) it is not the artists who lack (there is actually an active group of contributors for both games, who are eager to see their artwork in the game; examples: 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 , all CC-by-SA licensed) but a severe lack of programmers. An example of not yet implemented OD graphics So how can you help out and dig into the code, and why am I posting about both games the same time? Well both are actually build on a somewhat similar base, utilizing OGRE3D for graphics and CEGUI for the GU...

MegaGlest 3.3.5 Pre-release special!

Image
A new version of MegaGlest will be released sometime today! Once it is head over here to download it! A short changelog can be found here. MegaGlest is a relatively recent fork of the quite well known FOSS Game Glest , which ceased development some time back. Now that Megaglest has taken up the development, things have advanced quite quickly (in contrast to the other promising Glest fork GAE ) and Glest now finally has the long deserved cross platform multiplayer and a proper master-server with a games lobby! Furthermore Megaglest includes all the factions known from the Megapack before, bumping the total number up to 6. And believe it or not, qudobup and me tried to play a round (extreme n00b alert :D ), which we recored and commented here: Megaglest Multiplayer: Julius vs. qubodup [ HD .ogg (485M) | tinyogg | no-commentary .mp4 (364M)] All done with Free software by the way :D ( MegaGlest , glc , Audacity , PiTiVi and Mumble )! Interview with the Megaglest team For this Meg...

Non RTS strategy games

Image
An update so quickly? Behold the Free Gamer world is coming to an end. :p So, we mentioned some promising RTS games in the last update. OK, I forgot to mention Spring1944 , but I am also a bit reluctant to mention Spring and its mods since it is such a pain in the backside to get it running correctly. :( Back on topic... there a quite a few really great non RTS FOSS strategy games. I guess I don't really need to mention the classics to the typical reader of this blog, but Wesnoth , FreeCiv , FreeCol and UFO:AI are all very playable and good looking games! However there are others that get less attention and also some that show great promise! Advanced strategic command Advanced strategic command is one of those that gets relatively little news coverage, even though it is a really playable game. Granted, its graphics are pretty much the same as its big inspiration, the classic Battle Isle series , but that doesn't necessarily make them bad, right? A new version was just rele...
