Duck Marines, FOSS remake of ChuChu Rocket

Image
Thanks to Tangram Games for pointing out to us that they just released version 1.0 of their local multiplayer game Duck Marines . They describe it as: Duck Marines is a cross-platform free software PC remake of Sonic Team’s ChuChu Rocket . Duck Marines attempts to recreate the magic from the local multiplayer of ChuChu Rocket while adding new elements like mini games, a level editor, colorful pixel art and more. But see for yourself: For those not familiar with the original on the Dreamcast here is a small description of the gameplay: The goal of the game is to get as many ducks into the submarine of your color. Gray ducks give you one point, gold ducks give multiple points and pink ducks will trigger an event or mini game. Guide the ducks towards your submarine by placing arrows on the ground. When walking over an arrow ducks will instead walk in the direction the arrow is pointing. Beware of the blue predators. Predators love to eat ducks and will kill a large number of your ...

Ancient Beast: HTML5 Hexagonal RTS' First Release

Image
Ancient Beast is a FOSS game project that has been in development by Freezing Moon for a couple of years, tantalizing everyone with top notch concept art and 3D models.  After a rather large restructuring in game scope, where they changed from attempting to create a 3D RTS in the Blender Game Engine, to a 2D hexagonal TBS built on HTML5, they have delivered a promising gameplay prototype that offers a mix of Heroes of Might and Magic and Magic: The Gathering's gameplay.  Gameplay currently revolves around summoning creatures and using their abilities to defeat other summoners Still in heavy development, the game still needs to implement the entirety of its sizable bestiary , as well as adding animated creatures by utilizing the models they have created. So, if you have any skills in web development, jump aboard and help them complete this awesome game!

OpenGOO and Using Inkscape or Blender for Editing Maps/Levels

Image
Building bridges in OpenGOO video: New Physics in OpenGOO You may remember that in the first Humble Indie Bundle , World of Goo was not open-sourced. Well, there is an active open source clone called OpenGOO being developed. It uses OpenGL, Box2D and is GPLv3-licensed. Basic layers of level creation in OpenGOO A Shotgun Debugger level viewed in Inkscape There are instructions available for creating levels. Inkscape is used for that purpose, just like in  Shotgun Debugger ! A method I would love to see being widely used in games that allow for user-generated content in general. SuperTuxKart level editor (hint: it's Blender!) Speaking of not-re-inventing-wheels: the team behind SuperTuxKart recently posted an article about using Blender as a level editor, rather than writing and maintaining an own content creation tool, which I highly recommend to all developers of 3D games with 'traditional' engines.

Frozen Bubble 10th Anniversary

Image
Frozen Bubble for Android 2012 February the 6th was the 10th birthday of Frozen Bubble 's first release. The development was started in november 2001 by "ayo", amaury and Guillaume Cottenceau, members of the MandrakeSoft team (Mandriva nowadays). Frozen Bubble is a beautiful game inspired by Puzzle Bobble (published by Taito in 1994 , also called Bust-a-Move). The game has nice graphics and music (from matths alias Matthias). Frozen Bubble level editor for Android Development has stopped in 2008, but Frozen Bubble and its ports still enjoy high popularity, especially on the Linux and  Android  platforms. A Java port also exists. Only the first version is available  for Windows. A French language interview with the makers was recently published on linuxfr.org .

Developer interview: SuperTuxKart team.

Image
Hi folks, My name is Artem (KroArtem in IRC) and I wanted to post an article here almost for a year. Nowadays I have an opportunity to do this. Let me introduce myself: I'm studying at St.Petersburg State University, Faculty of Applied Mathematics and Control Processes, trying to become a programmer and a mathematician :) In my spare time I like to test some linux games, report bugs, give feedback, translate them and so on. Actually this is the way I've met SuperTuxKart developers. Today I want to obtain an interview from them. Firstly, let me remind you what SuperTuxKart is. SuperTuxKart is a kart racing game that features free software mascots, has a cartoony style, includes different game modes and supports multiplayer (split-screen). You can visit STK's site and receive some more information about the game. SuperTuxKart's new track, Blackhill Mansion Secondly, I want to name our beloved developers and contributors: Joerg «hiker» Henrichs, Marianne «Auria» Gagnon,...

GGJ License, EGP Feb 2012, STK Overworld, FG Interview

Image
GGJ 2012 Theme Global Game Jam 2012 is over and you can find all the by-nc-sa -licensed games here . We talked to the organizers about allowing free (as in freedom etc.) licenses and got some positive replies, but in the end it was too short a notice. We ask you now to write a short message to GGJ, asking for the inclusion of further licenses, for example a GPL+CC-BY-SA combination for GGJ 2013. Also feel free to discuss this in the comments. If you participated in GGJ, we would like to encourage you to release your games under free licenses in addition to the required nc license. EGP February 2012 Speaking of jams, the 7day-jam-during-one-month by Experimental Gameplay Project is " Infinite Worlds " for this month. STK Overworld As recently announced , one of the new features in SuperTuxKart 0.8 will be an overworld-connected challenge system. Durk Talsma: AI programmer Flight Gear's blog released a new interview . You can find the other interviews so far linked in this...

Mass Blaster: Ambidextrous Abstract Shooter

Image
Synchronized shooting in Mass Blaster Mass Blaster is one of the most intense arcade shooters for Windows and Linux. You will take control of two ships simultaneously to blast away at the invading Square Army. On your left, take down enemies with the red n' rad Trigerus. On your right, command the cool blue Pythagora to wipe out your foes. Choose from 4 modes of difficulty to fight your way through 10 gutsy levels. Only those with the skills to pilot both ships at the same time will go on to become High Score Heroes. This game shares a vein with games like Avoision and pumps adrenaline. Intended for one player, Mass Blaster plays superb with two pilots as well. Just get a keyboard emulator and a joystick to avoid key locking. Code is under GPL, while all other assets are under the not-so-free CC-BY-NC.
